The Zambia Bureau of Standards is expected to open a branch in Kabwe, Central province before the end of this year in a bid to get closer to consumers and producers of various products.
Bureau Head of Marketing and Public relations, Hazel Zulu said this when she gave an overview of the performance of the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport office.
The office which became operational last month has already recorded about 200 product inspections.
The products that have recorded the highest inspection volumes so far are condoms and electrical appliances.
These products fall under mandatory standards and must therefore be tested and inspected to safeguard public health and safety.
Mrs. Zulu is confident that the opening of the airport office will provide monitoring and quality control of regulated products that are either imported or exported through the airport.
The bureau has noted with concern that a reasonable number and assortment of products that enter into the Country through this route are of interest to bureau as some of them fall under mandatory standards.
Mrs. Zulu said that it is imperative that such products are inspected and tested for quality and safety.
She appealed to importers to ensure that they cooperate with our inspectors and to familiarize themselves with all the inspection procedures to help ease their cargo passage at the airport.
Mrs. Zulu has assured the public and other stakeholders that ZABS is committed to ensuring that only quality and safe products are found on the market countrywide.
Zambia Bureau of Standards has provincial offices in nine of the provinces apart from Central province.
