The decision to liberalize the 2017-2018 Maize Marketing Season by the government has been described as retrogressive to the growth of small scale farmers By Wynter Kabimba, the Leader of the Opposition Rainbow Party.

President Edgar Lungu last week said that the Food Reserve Agency will no longer set the flow price of maize beginning from next year.

But Mr. Kabimba has argued that the directive will not assist Small Scale Farmers as they are poised to lose out due to the inability to negotiate price with Grain Buyers.

He said that the head of state must be reminded that Small Scale Farmers must be protected considering that they are major contributors to national food security.

The Former Justice Minister has further asked the government to clearly state what will be the role of the Food Reserve Agency following the Liberalization of the Maize Market.

Mr. Kabimba added that without making a distinction between the two it will be creating confusion in the market especially if the Food Reserve Agency decides to set a high or low price of Maize.
