Inspector General of Police Mr. Kakoma Kanganja has confirmed at a press briefing today that United Party for National Development Leader Mr. Hakainde Hichilema has been jointly charged with treason along with five other people.
Mr. Kanganja Says Mr. Hichilema faces treason, disobeying lawful orders and using insulting language, among other charges.
The Opposition Leader is jointly charged With Lastone Mulilandumba, Muleya Haachenda, Walace Chakwa, Pretornous Haloba and Hamusonde Hamaleka.
Mr. Hichilema is currently detained At Lilayi Police Training College Station following his arrest on Tuesday this week after a midnight raid at his New Kasama Residence on Monday.
And Mr. Jack Mwiimbu, Who Is Upnd Monze Member of Parliament Mr. Hichilema, has described the action of the Police as ridiculous and vowed that they will not be intimidated further promising to take legal action.
Elsewhere Four Taxi Drivers in Choma, Southern Province have been arrested by the Zambia Police on allegations of burning tyres in choma central business district upon hearing of the arrest of Mr. Hichilema.
This is according to Provincial Police Commissioner Mr. Bonnie Kapeso.
Meanwhile the Human Rights Commission has encouraged the Zambia Police Service to maintain professionalism in the on-going investigations and interrogations of Mr. Hichilema.
Commission Spokesman Mr. Mwelwa Muleya has also appealed to UPND supporters to refrain from committing illegalities such as engaging in acts violence.
