Zambia Council for Social Development Executive Secretary Mr. Lewis Mwape has observed that the Central Statistics Office lacks capacity to conduct statistical surveys on short, medium and long term of national development demands.

His comment follows the approval of a National Strategy for the Development of Statistics Bill by the government.

The main objective of the bill is to establish an effective and efficient national statistical system that is responsive to the data requirements of a modern and smart Zambia.

And Mr. Mwape is confident that the Zambia Statistics Agency will ensure reliable, comprehensive and harmonized statistical information.

He said that the national statistics bill would not have come at a better time than now when the nation is expected to implement the sustainable development goals.

This also includes the Africa agenda 2063 which will require robust statistical system to aid effective and efficient measurement and estimation of development interventions.

Furthermore, the ZCSD Chief is confident that the Zambia statistics agency would be critical in providing current and update statistical data for monitoring the implementation of the seventh national development plan.

Mr. Mwape has appealed and encourage Members Of Parliament both the ruling and opposition political parties to fully to support the proposed national statistics bill once it is introduced to the house for enactment in the next sitting of parliament.

He feels that the bill once enacted would transform the central statistical office into an autonomous body that would bridge the gap in statistics and improve resource availability to enable the agency to respond to national demand for statistical consumption.
