Zambia National Farmers’ Union President Mr. Jervis Zimba says the status of being a BREADBASKET can only be achieved if agriculture is zero rated.
He was speaking ahead of the upcoming Agritech Expo-Zambia in Chisamba from the 27th to 29th April this year.
Mr. Zimba says the main challenge facing farmers today is the cost of production that is becoming higher while returns are becoming lower.
He added that farmers have no control over the prices and therefore their returns are diminishing and hopes that future national budgets will take such a proposal into consideration.
Over 17,600 visitors attended the Agritech Expo-Zambia last year and this year the farmers union expects to beat that number of local and foreign visitors.
As in previous years, Agritech Expo enjoys extensive support from the agric industry with well-known suppliers AFGRI and John Deere returning as platinum sponsors again.
Agritech Expo Zambia recently won two coveted awards at the AAXO ROAR Organiser and Exhibitor Awards in Johannesburg which honour excellence in the exhibition and events industry on the continent.
The expo has an outreach programme at the local Golden Valley Basic School, where, with the assistance of numerous event sponsors, it is assisting the school with much needed infrastructure upgrades, equipment supplies and management of the school’s farm.
