The Zambia Correctional Service needs about 72 million kwacha annually in order to adequately support 55 Correctional Centers and 34 open air facilities with an average population of 21,567 inmates.

This is according to Correctional Service Head of Public Relations Ms. MARGARET NAWA, who said that they only receive 36 Million kwacha per year from central government, an amount not sufficient to respond to needs of prisons.

Meanwhile FOOD Suppliers are owed a total of 13.3 Million kwacha by Zambian prisons, the debt dates from 2013 to 2015 with the exclusion of last year to date.

And Ms. NAWA has since assured suppliers that the debt is earmarked for clearance once funds are made available by the treasury.
