Out of the 80 Million Small-Holder Farmers in the Common Market For Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) Region; only 20 Percent have Access to Quality and Improved Seed.


In Addition the Potential Total Seed Market in COMESA Region is at 2 Million Metric Tonnes of Quality and improved Seed; however, the Region is currently Producing and Accessing less than 520,000 Metric Tonnes of Quality and Improved Seed.


This has Affected about 130 Million People Out of Total 520 Million COMESA Population remaining Food Insecure, Experience Chronic Poverty and Hunger.


This was Revealed by COMESA Assistant Secretary General Programmes, Dr Kipyego Cheluget during the Modalities of COMESA Seed Labels and Certificates Meeting, where he was represented by COMESA Senior Investment Officer, Mr. Joseph Mpunga.


At the same Meeting, Agriculture Permanent Secretary Julius Shawa said Zambia Produces 130,000 Metric Tonnes of Certified Seed and only 6,000 Metric Tonnes is Exported.


He was Represented at the Meeting by Mrs Marble Simwanza, Director of Seed Control and Certification in the Ministry of Agriculture.
