The Zambia Environmental Management Agency has called on institutions or organizations that are mandated to control invasive alien species within their vicinity to engage the agency so as to curtail their impact on the environment.
An invasive alien species is any kind of living organism that is not native to an ecosystem and causes harm.
In the developing world, estimates indicate that invasive alien species have led to a drop in crop yields by more than 25 percent.
ZEMA Principal Inspector for Natural Resources Rodwel Chandipo has emphasized the need for members of the public to act swiftly once they identify them by reporting to the agency or destroying them.
He stresses that Invasive Alien Species are a source of concern owing to the danger they pose to the environment but indicated that ZEMA has been sensitizing members of the community on the impact of Invasive Alien Species.
