The Centre for Trade Policy and Development has doubted whether the exemptions of taxes on capital goods, inputs, among others provided in the sales tax bill will effectively address the challenges of the new tax regime once it comes into effect on 1st July 2019.
According to CTPD Executive Director, Isaac Mwaipopo the implications of collecting tax at every stage in the supply chain is likely to outweigh the benefits of the exemption list of goods and services provided by the sales tax bill.
The CTPD Executive Director is concerned that the exemption list is more focused on the input side.
He states that this will not help address most of the inflation problem adding that the government needs to consider the effects of sale tax before implementing.
