GOVERNMENT URGED TO ENHANCE FUNDING IN THE WATER SECTOR

As the Country joins the Global Community in marking world water week, Water Aid Zambia communications Officer, Isabel Mukelebai has noted with concern that in the last 10 years, the water sector has been receiving inadequate funding.

This year’s commemoration is being held in Stockholm Sweden from the 26 to the 31st of August, 2018 and it is carried out under the theme “Water, Ecosystems and Human Development”.

Under the 2018 national budget, the government has allocated 564.5 million kwacha to the Water and Sanitation Sector.

But Mukelebai has told 5fm news that the funding is below the 0.5 percent benchmark that has been put in place to allow government to provide funding towards the water and sanitation sector.

She further points out that the allocation is inadequate to address the challenges the sector is faced with hence the need to increase funding.
