The Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has challenged the Patriotic Front Administration to quickly explore sustainable ways which will help the country service the debts it has accrued from the time the party came in power in 2011.
UPND Deputy Secretary General Patrick Mucheleka feels the country should not continue borrowing in 2019 because debts have proved to be a burden on ordinary Zambians who are already wallowing in abject poverty.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the country’s external debt as at close of the third quarter was 9.51 billion United States dollars from 9.37 billion United States dollars in the second quarter of 2018.
In an interview with 5fm News Mucheleka has advised the government to ensure that it sticks to austerity measures and further avoid reckless borrowing and spending.
