The Young Women Christian Association Council of Zambia says the increase in the number of reported Gender Based Violence cases in 2018 is a positive development as this shows that most victims are seeking help.

According to the Zambia Police, a total number of 22,073 cases of Gender Based Violence were reported country wide in 2018 compared to 2017 where 21,504 cases were recorded showing an increase of 2.6 percent.

Council Executive Director Patricia Ndhlovu says the fast track courts being established across the country have helped in the quick dispensation GBV cases but however notes that there is need to intensify GBV awareness programs which will help curb the scourge.

Meanwhile, Ndhlovu has called on the government to expedite the process of reviewing the Anti-GBV Act of 2011 as this will include stiffer punishment for offenders.
