Opposition Socialist Party President, Fred Mmembe has suggested the need to reduce not less than 50 percent of allowances for top leaders if the government is to revive the deteriorating economy.

Dr Mmembe notes with concern that people are currently only wanting to be employed in government due to the luxuries that come with the job at the expense of the private sector.

Dr. Mmembe has also suggested that travelling costs for government officials must be cut down to not less than 60 percent as this will lessen the government’s expenditure which can be directed towards social sectors.

But in response, Patriotic Front Deputy Media Director Antonio Mwanza has argued that government has put in place austerity measures citing the removal of Members of Parliament transport allowances which is saving over 30, 000 Kwacha monthly.
