The government says it will not succumb to calls by stakeholders to increase the price of a 50-kilogram bag of maize from the current 110 kwacha because doing so might trigger an increase in the price of mealie meal on the market.
F-R-A has pegged a 50 kg bag of maize at 110 Kwacha a, move that has been received with mixed by stakeholders, with some urging the Government to intervene and adjust the price upward.
But Agriculture Minister, Michael Katambo has told 5fm news that the country has a liberalized market and farmers who are against the food reserve agency f-r-a announced price are at liberty to sale their maize where they are been offered a higher price.
The Minister adds that the decision to buy maize at the current price is, aimed at stabilizing the current price of mealie meal on the market.
