KAPATA EXPRESSES IGNORANCE OVER INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT AT THE FOREST RESERVE NUMBER 27

JEAN KAPATA

Lands and Natural Resources Minister has expressed ignorance over the current infrastructure development taking place at the Forest Reserve Number 27, located in State Lodge area, saying she has not received any official notification from concerned parties.

Last week William Harrington who served as Environmental and Natural Resources Minister, in the MMD government said the infrastructure development taking place at the forest reserve is illegal and is likely to lead among other things, the depletion and contamination of groundwater resources in the capital city.

An Environmentalist, Robert Chimambo also commented on the matter alleging that Lands and Natural Resources Minister and former Vice President, Enoch Kavindele are among the prominent people that have started putting up some infrastructures in the area.

Speaking during a Patriotic Front Interactive Forum, Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Jean Kapata acknowledge that part of forest reserve was degazetted and some plots where allocated to some people but could not comment on future implications of such a move.

Meanwhile, the Lands and Natural Resources Minister has revealed plans to revoke some timber licenses in Western and North-western provinces with the view to bring sanity in the sector.

The minister is particularly concerned that some traditional leaders in some parts of the country are allowing some foreigners to harvest timber without licenses from the forestry department.
