The national democratic congress says It is unfortunate that President Edgar Lungu is now using proceeds of perceived crime to deceive and manipulate some sections of the clergy.
Party secretary general Mwenye Musenge has alleged that the whole essence of the disbursement of suspected laundered money to the church is clearly suspicious.
He says President Lungu is disbursing money to the clergy purely for political expediency and nothing else.
The opposition leader explained that Mr. Lungu wants to woo and corrupt the body of Christ using resources he too might not even know the source.
“We are concerned that 750 pastors were recently paraded and forced to shower praises on the Head of State after his cronies and agents dished out funds to the said clergy,” said Musenge.
He says The use of funds and other material things to hoodwink the church is not new to Zambian politics adding that late Fredrick Chiluba used the Presidential slash fund then for his inimical and selfish political machinations.
“Not even a single pastor who benefited from his proceeds of crime where present when the task force on corruption was probing Dr. Chiluba.
Dr. Chiluba died a sad man, and all those ” men of Gold”, who vehemently praised him, does not even attend his memorial service.
President Rupiah Banda also did the same, he gave out cash, buses to pastors and prophets including other material possessions. What happened in 2011? Zambians laughed the loudest and the rest is history.
In all this, it seems President Lungu is failing to draw lessons from history,” he added.
He said by giving handouts to the church, the Head of State is manipulating the clergy.
