With rapid population growth and urbanization, annual waste generation globally is expected to increase by 70 percent from 2016 levels to 3.40 billion tonnes in 2050.

Compared to those in developed nations, residents in developing countries, Zambia inclusive, are more severely impacted by unsustainably managed waste.

With the continued rise in waste generation, some Lusaka residents have called on the city council, to improve waste management in order to address the open or backyard burning of waste.
