POLICE CANCEL A UPND RALLY

Police cancelled a UPND rally that was scheduled to take place today at Nkenyauma in Kasempa District of North Western Province because of the violence perpetrated by the campaign team of the UPND party at Chief Kasempa’s Palace today between 09:30 hours and 10:00 hours.

The UPND campaign team is reported to have gone to Chief Kasempa’s Palace to pay a courtesy call on the Chief but upon hearing that the area District Commissioner was at the Palace, they forced open the gate to the palace, forced themselves inside and started beating those they found whom they had suspected to be Patriotic Front cadres and forced them to leave.

They have since opened dockets of Assault and we wish to state that police are on the ground pursuing all those that were involved.

Zambia police public relations officer Esther katongo who confirmed this to 5fm news said the Public Order Act is very clear when it comes to holding of Political activities, rallies and meetings inclusive adding that All those that would want to ignore the provisions of the Law will at no point be tolerated but dealt with sternly according to the Provisions of the Law.

She says Palaces are respected areas therefore the action by the UPND Campaign team was disrespectful, uncalled for and leaves much to be desired.

Meanwhile, in Western Province, Police have arrested three people in connection with the violence that characterized by-elections in Limulunga last Saturday.

Those arrested are Nyambe Matakala who is UPND District youth Chairman, John Chinga and Aaron Muyambango.

The three who have been jointly charged and are facing two counts of Assault and two counts of Malicious Damage to property.

They are currently detained in Police custody and will appear in Court soon.

“As  Police, we wish to reiterate our position that we are not going to allow any lawlessness in this Country, because this is a Country of Laws and all those that will choose to step outside what the Law provides , will have themselves to blame” says Katongo.
