TEACHERS URGED TO CONTROL BULLYING

Teachers in public Schools have been urged to handle cases of bullying among pupils strategically to avoid bad behaviors from worsening.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in a 2007 paper, says bullying is a common behavior in schools with 80 percent of primary school pupils having been bullied, most of them within the classroom.

UNICEF, which defines bullying as a process in which a pupil or group of pupils repeatedly uses his/their superior strength or influence to mistreat, attack or force other persons to do something, notes that it’s a common problem in schools.

According to a University of Zambia case study of 2012 showed that both girls and boys were victims of bullying and rate of bullying was higher among boys than girls in grades 1, 3 and 5.

And speaking to 5fm News Unite Girl’s Foundation Coordinator Blessings Chabu says the ministry of education should engage more trained guidance and counseling teachers.
