The Human Rights Commission is saddened that almost 30 years down the line, from the time the country introduced multi partism, rights to freedom of assembly and expression for some individuals or groups of individuals with divergent views have continued being suppressed by authorities.
Commissions Spokesperson Mweelwa Muleya comment comes in the wake of the 18th of April, incident in which police in Eastern Province blocked NDC Leader Chishimba Kambwili from addressing a public rally in Chipata district on account that he was not on the list of the notification which was submitted by the NDC to the police.
But Muleya has told 5fm news, that such incidents must be redressed as the country heads towards the 2021 general elections.
Muleya is also concerned that radio stations in Eastern Province were not allowed to, host Dr Kambwili.
And Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) President Mwenda Mumbuna says the blocking of the NDC’s rally has the potential to dent the country’s democracy.
