The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture-IITA has disclosed that Afflatoxins threaten Maize and Groundnuts Production in the country.
Aflatoxin is a poison produced by certain fungi that are found on agricultural crops such as Maize and Groundnuts.
This came into light when the institute in collaboration with other relevant research institutes conducted a survey between 2011 and 2015 which revealed increased levels of Afflatoxin contamination in Maize and Groundnuts.
Speaking in an interview with 5fm news, organization plant pathologist Dr Juliet Akello explains that the Afflatoxin contamination usually happens in areas experiencing prolonged dry spells.
Dr Akello however adds that G-I-Z and US-AID donated over one million United States dollars which led to the development of a biological control product which will help in mitigating Afflatoxins in the country.
