The Opposition United Party for National Development UPND has questioned the arrest of Patriots for Economic Progress Leader Sean Tembo.
Police in Lusaka have arrested Tembo, who is also a member of the alliance of opposition political parties for allegedly defaming President Edgar Lungu in his posts on social media dated 15th March 2019.
The Patriots for Economic Progress Leader is currently detained in police custody and Police Public Relations Officer Esther Katongo has indicated that more details will be availed in due course.
But UPND Deputy Secretary General Patrick Mucheleka feels Tembo has been arrested for merely speaking out the truth about the current hunger situation which is being experienced in some parts of the country as a result of the drought.
However, Political Scientist from the University of Zambia, Alex Ngoma has reminded politicians to be issue-based and avoid politics of character assassination.
Dr Ngoma says people must not politicize the arrest of the Patriots for Economic Progress Leader, by police but rather draw positive lessons especially on the need to respect the presidency.
Dr.Ngoma feels disrespecting the president is detrimental to the country’s democracy.
