The Ministry Of Livestock And Fisheries has been accused of defeating the agenda of growing the Livestock sector following a hike in veterinary services of up to 500 percent.

It comes after Minister of Livestock and Fisheries Michael Katambo has signed a Statutory Instrument Number 105 of 2016.

According to the statutory instrument seen by 5fm radio, government veterinary officers will now charge 125 kwacha for the first hour during farm visits and 100 kwacha for each subsequent hour.

But Small Scale Farmer’s Development Agency Director, Boyd Moombwe has described the move as very unfortunate considering that the cost of doing business has gone up in Zambia.

50 kwacha will be charged for meat inspection per animal and 200 kwacha for a slaughter permit while 250 kwacha for fertility testing per animal and 50 kwacha consultation.

And the Zambia National Farmers Union said that the policy was formulated without private sector consultations.
